JJ's Wedding Reception Defies Expectations

By Brian White at 08/22/08 09:45

As a native of Atlanta, and a longstanding professional at the "air travel" company here, I would have been offended if I wasn't invited to JJ's wedding last month. Lucky for him, for you, and really for me as well, I did get my invite in the mail, and I responded with glee and vigor. See the wedding you can keep, and a good thing because very few of us were invited, but the reception was sure to be unbelievable, and you can bet it was.

JJ isn't his name of course, but if you know him, you know who I'm talking about. He hasn't done anything halfway since college, and that's what's put him where he is today. He's got more money than most of us will see in a lifetime, a new bride befitting such a champ, and for him there is almost nothing off limits.

That's why I had to be at his reception. I RSVPd, I bought the blender, and I got to go.

At any given time there must have been about 500 people there, though they kept coming and going because The Red & Green Steakhouse has a private entrance and separate parking lot around the back for guests to private events. The ceilings were high, the drinks were endless, and the space available was befitting a prince of the air like JJ.

If you didn't know that there are real restaurants in Atlanta that have whole floors of fully furnished space for parties like this, then join the club, because I didn't either, and I was blown away by it. Not just that they had the space, but it had a full lights setup, a well equipped DJ booth and even karaoke… oh yes, that's right, they had karaoke.

Forget the bride and groom's first dance, the real magic of the night came when JJ's dad, Milt, threw down with the Sister Sledge classic "We Are Family" on karaoke in front of 500 wide-eyed and attentive of Atlanta's most influential. I'm not kidding, and he didn't just put it down like a vet, he killed it. Only thing worse I could imagine from a drunk dad at a time like this would have been White Wedding by Billy Idol, but this was a really close second.

I was hoping for "My Humps", but his choice still made my night.

It just goes to show what liquor service at a reception can bring. Mind you, there was plenty of bread and a full Brazilian service of wait staff constantly wandering around with skewers of the most awesome meats you've ever had, but still, once you've seen Milt sing the classics, food kind of loses its luster.

If you're looking for the party of a lifetime, you've missed it, and I say that only because I next enjoyed a bunch of hours too fun and embarrassing to recount. If you're looking for a killer restaurant with a full gourmet offering at a party, I honestly can't think of any other place in Atlanta or any other city that has as much to offer as the Red & Green Steakhouse, and even though I'm technically getting paid to write this review, I'm not getting paid to say anything nice about the restaurant. Those guys just rocked, and not because any of the waitresses appreciated my somewhat inebriated advances.
